In Loving Memory of Yvonne “Tiny” Decory

On January 5, 2026, we lost one of the fiercest advocates for the people of Pine Ridge and the Lakota community.

Tiny was known as someone whose presence brought steadiness and reassurance. She cared deeply about Lakota youth and families on the Pine Ridge Reservation and believed, without hesitation, in the strength and worth of young people. She saw possibility where others saw risk, and she remained committed to those she served, even when circumstances were difficult.

Wherever there was a need, Tiny showed up. She answered calls at any hour of the day or night, sitting with families during moments of profound loss, and staying present when situations were uncomfortable or heartbreaking. Her care was rooted in love for her people.

As a founder of the BEAR Project, Tiny created programs that were grounded in cultural values, sustained by optimism, and centered on recognizing the strength in every person. When systems moved too slowly or failed to respond, she acted.

Tiny’s absence is felt deeply on Pine Ridge and far beyond it. So, too, is her influence. The care she gave, the lives she touched, and the belief she held in Lakota youth continue to shape the community and the work she helped bring into the world.
